How much would it cost to replace the head gasket on a 96 Cadillac Deville?

Im looking at buying a 96 Cadillac Deville Sedan, but it needs a new head gasket. How much would it cost to replace that?|||Mechanics would have to "tear into" the top of the motor to get to it.

The head gasket set itself is $219, but that would make for other gaskets to be replaced as well, and gives the mechanic a chance to check for other problems while the engine is open. Just what you've always wanted to hear, heh..

It will be costly; however, I can't give you an estimate as my experience only deals in the gaskets themselves.

See if you can get the owner to offset the price of the vehicle by about $1000 to account for the repair. My other suggestion is DO NOT let him say, "If you buy it, we'll repair it for you." because in those instances they already know they're about to get rid of the car so the general consensus for the mechanic would be, "Why do I want to take my time on something that will be out of our hands after completion?"

There are always other cars and most definitely other cadillacs that are always being placed on sale. Surely, many of them will have no costly repair in its possession. Consider waiting.

Concerning motor replacement, that replacement will run for slightly less in my opinion, but will still be costly. You also have to take into consideration the MANY parts on another part placed in the vehicle; each that have a chance to be bad, especially with an owner who knows the vehicle is sold during the replacement.

Also, you will never find a new motor to place in it because new motors aren't made for used cars.

Best of luck!|||If it needs a new head then the whole engine may need to be changed....Around $1300 if you are lucky.|||If it is not the Northstar engine you may not need a gasket. The 4.9 engines are aluminum block and iron head and GM says you must put in new antifreeze with a can of their block sealant every year. If you don't, the gasket leaks. You might get by with installing the sealer and re-torqueing the head bolts - and you might not. If not, $1500.|||Like said above will need a different engine. The cost of putting in head gaskets is more than the price of a used engine and not much less than a new engine.|||if its just a gasket you are lucky, is it loosing coolant or loosing compression or both, has it overheated? good luck and I hope for your sake its only a gasket but if you are going to do one I would advise to do both, while its apart
